Arctic Hotel Rovaniemi

Homage to Rovaniemi

Project designed in collaboration with:
Jaewon Choi

Staying above the Arctic circle has always been a challenge. The native inhabitants of Rovaniemi and the surrounding lands, the Sami tribe, have conquered the elements and lived for years in this challenging climate. For this reason, the tribe’s architecture formed the main inspiration for the design of the twenty freestanding rooms of the Arctic Hotel Rovaniemi. The modern interpretation of the vernacular architecture is designed to ensure the most optimal experience for visitors observing the dancing northern lights. Located on a mountain right outside the city, the location allows for views of Rovaniemi and her surroundings. The large windows on the southern side of the cabins ensure people can enjoy these views optimally.

In similar fashion, the reception building is designed to make optimal use of all the surroundings have to offer. The windows in the restaurant ensure visitors can enjoy panoramic views while enjoying meals. Due to the way in which the building is composed, a courtyard is created in which guests can come together around a fire and observe the Aurora Borealis.
