Kröller-Müller Museum Expansion

Adding a sculpture

This expansion for the Kröller-Müller museum on the Hoge Veluwe national park houses five new exposition spaces, new ateliers and additional storage space. The analysis shows the route through the existing museum was rather linear; moving between the different exposition spaces through a single corridor. The proposal adds two new wings to the museum, making the movement through the museum circular and continuous.

The project’s main focus was the exposition wing above the sculpture garden. To ensure accessibility to the sculpture garden, the wing is lifted above the ground. People move through the different exposition spaces and intermezzos in between, that form the accents and the corners of the block. The façades are clad with perforated, aluminium panels that allow filtered light to enter the exposition spaces. The aluminium, together with the eccentric shape of the building, makes it a true addition to the sculpture garden.

1. Program subdivided into equal proportions.

2. Program as a sequence of spaces.

3. Creating intermezzos between the exposition spaces that serve as light and open accents on the corners of the volume.
