Good architecture has the ability to improve the quality of life on our planet.
-
In our daily lives, we constantly encounter buildings, whether we like it or not. It is the societal responsibility of an architect to ensure that these guaranteed encounters enrich our lives, or at least not bother us.
-
As a profession deep-rooted in society, architecture should be aware of contemporary societal challenges. The current environmental challenges force architects to review their way of working and building critically. In the spirit of sustainable design, themes such as circularity and biodiversity should be the foundation of the design process.
-
For architecture to contribute to society is no easy feed. It requires the true skill of a craftsman to bring together all spatial considerations in a pleasing design.
My drive
It is my firm belief that we should all strive to contribute to society. What defines us, is how we choose to contribute to society. My drive to make our world a better place originates from this belief. And what better way to make our world a better place than through architecture and the design of our living environment? My passion for architecture is rooted in three main themes: human-centred design, sustainability and craftsmanship. I strive to engage these different themes in my design, for I believe that by bringing these together architecture has the power to improve the quality of life, all life.
Human-centred
In contemporary society, we spend most of our time indoors; we live in our homes, and we work in the office. Even when we are not indoors, we constantly encounter buildings. As we move about, we usually move from one building to the other. It is rare, especially in the Netherlands, that we find a place which has not been altered by human interference. In a world where everything is planned, and all is designed, we should take responsibility for how we design, since what we design affects us all. Thus, as we design, we should constantly consider how buildings are perceived. The human experience should be central in the design process. It is eventually for people that we design.
Sustainable
When looking out for humanity’s best interests, it is important to realize that in essence, we all share a home. A home that we cannot replace nor truly renovate; we only have one planet and we have to make do with what we got. It is thus vital that as we have to share this home with more and more people, we keep it healthy. We have to be aware that designing a better living environment, means designing a healthier one. It means designing for an environment that is more biodiverse, one in which we reduce our material and energy consumption, and limit the emissions of greenhouse gasses. To achieve these goals, architects need to review the way they work. Instead of continuously introducing new materials that are disposed of after use, we have to find ways to bind the two ends of the chain and create a circular economy.
Artisanal
Designing spaces that improve the quality of life of the people they affect, requires skill, experience and research; it requires passion, devotion and commitment. Only a true craftsman has attained all the necessary skills to affect people through design. For people to react positively to architecture, all proportions, materials and details need to be right. That makes architecture an artisan profession by nature. Knowing your material and understanding the spaces you create, let alone the relationship between the two, can only be done with a hands-on approach.
